I bought my dream wedding dress – but it’s the same gown my friend wore to marry her ex-husband just hours before she found him CHEATING with his coworker at the reception
- The bride-to-be, 29, took to a popular Reddit thread to ask if she was the a**hole
- The unnamed woman noted that she bought the same dress her friend wore
- Her pal, 31, has requested that she not wear it but the bride is still keen to do so
A bride-to-be has been slammed after revealing she purchased the same dress her close friend wore years earlier during a disastrous wedding day.
The unnamed 29-year-old woman, believed to be from the US, took to Reddit to lament about her struggles to find the perfect gown without breaking the bank.
She came across her dream dress while at a thrift store and immediately gushed over the outfit to all of her pals and sent them a photo before she took it home.
However, one of her friends, Caitlyn, 31, informed the bride that she had donned the same exact dress years before at her own wedding where she discovered her then-husband cheating with his coworker at the reception. She demanded her friend return the gown or risk losing their bond.

The bride-to-be took to the discussion forum in a thread titled Am I the A**hole to question if she was in the wrong for wanting to hold onto the dress, despite her close friend begging her to get rid of it.
At the beginning of the post, she explained: ‘I (29F) am getting married next May to my boyfriend of 11 years (29M). We have been engaged since the birth of our kid five years ago. Due to a number of circumstances, chiefly finances, we have had a long engagement.
‘I have been friends with Caitlyn (31F) since grade school, and although we are not best friends, we have had a long and joyful friendship that means a lot to me. I went to Caitlyn’s wedding to her college sweetheart, which happened when she was freshly graduated at 23.
‘Unfortunately, her husband was found in a bathroom stall with his coworker at the reception.
‘My heart broke for her, and I was part of her support system in the aftermath. She is now happily remarried with two kids of her own. ‘
The woman noted that wedding planning has been a struggle for her as she has found it difficult to find a gown that made her feel confident, fit her large chest, and didn’t break the bank.
However, while thrift shopping last week, she found her dream dress at just $30.
The bride-to-be couldn’t believe her eyes, the dress fit her perfectly and was everything that she could have ever wanted.

She quickly snapped a photo of the gown and sent to her closest pals before purchasing it.
The woman explained: ‘Right away, I sent a photo to everyone I could think of, including Caitlyn. She called me immediately. I didn’t see it then, but when I got home, I saw that I had multiple missed calls and texts from Caitlyn.
‘So, it’s her wedding dress from her marriage to her ex. Apparently, she finally decided to let go of it.
‘Since it was so long ago, I genuinely didn’t recognize it. It’s also not as if she goes around parading her wedding photos. Once she said it, I remembered right away.’
The 29-year-old noted that it all made sense because the two friends had previously discussed their similar body types.
Caitlyn demanded her friend return the dress, adding that if she didn’t she wouldn’t come to the wedding.
She also said that she would cut their friendship off all together.
‘I felt sick to my stomach because it was obvious she didn’t want me to wear the dress, and I was already super attached to it. I stopped engaging for the rest of the night and talked it over with my fiancé and some other friends. Opinions are split.
‘Some know how hard this process has been for me, and think Caitlyn is being petty. Honestly, I don’t. I get where she’s coming from. But I literally cannot keep looking. And it was $30. I have a five-year-old. I would love to spend wedding dress money on her instead,’ she said.
People flooded the comments and fiercely slammed the bride-to-be for her behavior – referring to her as OP, meaning Original Poster
She noted that she wanted to find a solution that allowed her to keep the dress and friendship.
At the end of the post, she questioned if she was an ‘a**hole.’
People flooded the comments and fiercely slammed the bride-to-be for her behavior – referring to her as OP, meaning Original Poster.
One person said: ‘OP’s friend will emotionally be terribly hurt when she sees this dress on someone else, and legitimately so. For OP, this fess means NOTHING. For her friend, it is filled with awful memories.
‘OP is the a**hole if she choses a dress over not hurting her friend.’
Someone else commented: ‘I am a crystal woo woo girlie. Don’t wear the dress. Don’t wear the dress.’
‘Considering they are grade school friends, I am sure there will be some overlap in the guest list, someone will certainly notice and it will be the talk of the night. I am pretty sure it’s not a great idea for either of them to be honest,’ someone else added.
Another user wrote: ‘You’re the a**hole. Pretty dresses are nice, but a friendship is worth more. ‘
Someone else said: ‘Exactly. OP is not the first woman to have a larger bust. There are countless wedding dresses out there that are tailored for women with OP’s body shape and dimensions.’
Users continued to pile in as another wrote: ‘You’re the a**hole. Pretty dresses are nice, but a friendship is worth more’
‘Can you imagine, you are at your wedding. You get married and then find your new husband cheating on you at the reception. That’s got to be about the most painful way to find that out.
‘Then your really good friend gets married and you have to look at her in your dress. The dress you suffered through that day. A symbol of being so hurt and so wronged thrown in your face.
‘Then you get to see that dress all over your social media, in your house, and probably on your phone. I completely get her not wanting to attend. You can wear it, but don’t expect her to be there, congratulate you or anything else. She may be okay seeing you eventually,’ someone else added.
One person wrote: ‘Sounds like the friendship was only worth 30 bucks from what I see.’
One user said: ‘You’re the a**hole, you value this $30 dress over your friendship? She may have moved on with her life, but this was still an absolutely crushing moment in her life. Don’t disrespect her like that.’
Someone else added: ‘You’re the a**hole for wearing it, and even asking. It’s her dress. You will humiliate her endlessly and trivialize the incredible pain she endured by wearing it.’
