Make your own pumpkin spice syrup with just four ingredients

With the autumn equinox just days away, it’s time to break out our cozy sweaters and switch our coffee orders to pumpkin spice. But there’s no need to go out and drop a pretty penny on a premade autumnal-flavored latte. 

You can make pumpkin spice syrup at home with just four ingredients in under 20 minutes. You only need sugar, brown is preferred but white will suffice, ground or stick cinnamon, pumpkin purée, and water.

The following syrup recipe is estimated to make a week’s worth of savory pumpkin spice beverages.

Pumpkin spice syrup recipe


  • Brown sugar
  • Water
  • Six cinnamon sticks or two teaspoons of ground cinnamon
  • Four tablespoons of pumpkin purée

Start by combining one and a half cups of sugar, brown is preferred by white also works, and one and a half cups of water in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Once the sugar is dissolved, add either six cinnamon sticks or two teaspoons of ground cinnamon and four tablespoons of pumpkin purée. 

For extra flavor and spice, you can also add one teaspoon of ground cloves and one teaspoon of ground ginger at the same time, as well as a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Let these ingredients sit and simmer for approximately 15 to 20 minutes before removing from the heat and straining them through cheesecloth. 

You can use this simple syrup recipe to make a variety of autumnal-flavoured drinks from pumpkin spice lattes to smoothies and cocktails. 

After being such a popular secret menu item, Starbucks officially added their pumpkin cream chai tea latte to their autumn menu this year.

Tiktoker Ramya (@eatsbyramya) who has amassed 393.6k followers on the app at press time shared her own authentic chai recipe to make an at home pumpkin spice chai. 

She says to heat up one cup of water until hot, then add a pinch of ground cardamom and a big pinch of pumpkin pie spice.Then add black tea leaves and let that simmer before steeping it in half a cup of your preferred milk. Stir it all together before straining.
