Fashion editor’s all-time favourite looks from ‘Clueless’ | The Sun

IT was a film that launched careers, created catchphrases and made us REALLY want a tartan skirt.

Twenty-seven years ago (yes, we're that old) Clueless hit the big screen starring now household names, Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd (who looks exactly the same – does that man age?!) and the sadly departed Brittany Murphy.

The '90s high school film was inspired by Jane Austen’s famous novel Emma, but instead of bonnets and boned corsets, the famous flick features very different fashion.

For one, rather than being set in a fictitious Cotswolds village, Cher and her mates roam about Beverly Hills.

No teen or 20-something girl watching it could be failed to be mesmerised by the cast's wardrobe – least of all her conveyer belt of clothes, picked out by a computer (technology we still covet BTW).

But even though scientists haven't yet created a Cher-style fashion finder for every household, we can still long for the outfits.

Here, Fabulous’ Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend reveals her all-time favourite looks from Clueless – follow her guide and you will look like a total Betty.

CHECK CO-ORD

One of the first times we see Cher Horowitz is when she is going off to school in a yellow and black check co-ord.

The blazer and pleated mini skirt with knee-high white socks and matching yellow cardigan is undoubtedly the film's most famous outfit.

The look has been recreated by stars such as Cara Delevingne, Iggy Azalea and most recently Kim Kardashian. She transformed into Cher and daughter North West played best friend, Dion, for Halloween.

The unforgettable canary plaid look is also when Cher cries “Ugh, as if!” one of the movies most famous lines.

Whilst the school-girl style look transports you to the 90’s, pleated minis and jackets are available now on the high street making this look a timeless classic.

FABULOUS IN FLANNEL

Another one of Cher’s most stylish looks is her oversized red and black flannel jacket with black beret and knee-high socks.

With a coordinating black back and Diet Coke in hand, her outfit is simple but stylish and is something you could stumble across on your social media channels today.

In fact, there are 1.4billion views on TikTok of Clueless outfits and influencers recreating this chic look.

The beret became Cher's signature headwear as she wears it multiple times in the film and is still as chic today.

RED VELVET MINI

Cher’s BFF Dion also has some of the best outfits in Clueless.

Often matching her best friend in mirroring style the pair share the same love for fashion – and shopping.

One of her top outfits has to be this long sleeved, red velvet mini dress.

With a stark white collar, sleeves, hair band and, of course, knee high socks in contrast to the deep ruby red her outfit is simple but bold and memorable.

Paired with black Mary Jane shoes, again very on trend for this season this look would easily be worn today.

Brands such as & Other Stories and H&M are selling mini shift dresses for the party season.

SUBSTANTIAL SHEERING

Synonymous with the 90s, sheering had a huge roll to play in Clueless.

From Kate Moss’ slip to Chers love of see-through shirt you couldn’t move for transparency during the iconic style era.

Cher would wear black or white sheer blouses layered with contrasting colours – either under or over – and mostly with a mini skirt.

They we’re a nod to her trying to be an adult, and more grown up.

However the whimsical and delicate fabric with fluffy jumpers and feathers also showed she was still very child-like.

Her sheer outfits are still trending today with A-listers such as Rihanna and Rita Ora big fans.

90s BLOW DRY

When mentioning Clueless, homage must be paid to Cher’s bouncy and beautiful blow dry.

According to Google, last year searches for '90s blonde hair' jumped by 100 per cent with many quoting Cher’s luscious locks as inspiration.
