Rio Ferdinand and former Spice Girls Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton lead a host of celebrities sending words of encouragement to the Lionesses ahead of their final match on Sunday.

The English side – led by coach Sarina Wiegman – will take on Spain in the final stage of the Women’s World Cup in Sydney, Australia.

Leading the influx of star-studded support was former England player and ex-footballer Rio who sent the ladies good luck having worn the country’s jersey 81 times himself.

The 44-year-old retired sportsman participated in a heartwarming video posted to the Lionesses’ Instagram page and filmed himself saying: ‘This is a moment man, this is history in the making.

‘You girls are close. I’ve had every faith in you, man. So please, make me cry. Make me cry. Let’s go.’

Following suit, former singers and Spice Girls Geri and Emma separately offered their words of support in the reel and beamed as they shared their admiration for the team.

Geri exclaimed: ‘Lionesses, we are so proud of you. Sarina, you’re inspirational. Mary… Girls you’ve got this. Best of luck. Mwah!’

Emma smiled as she said: ‘Hi guys, it’s Emma Bunton here. We are so proud of you. I can’t imagine how your family are feeling. Sending you so much love. All the luck in the world and I’ll be watching.’

Elsewhere, singer Paloma Faith gushed over the girls, sharing: Hi it’s me Paloma Faith wishing you, the Lionesses, all the luck in the world tomorrow for the World cup Final.

‘I’m right behind you. I feel so inspired and empowered by everything you’re doing. So on behalf of all the women of Britain, thank you and go and get that cup because you deserve it, we all deserve it, mwah.’

Jess Glynne stood poolside wearing a red jersey as she offered the women some words of inspiration: ‘Hey girls I just want to wish you a massive good luck for Sunday.

‘You guys have been so amazing in the tournament so far and I’m so gassed you’re in the final – go get it,’ before screaming ‘England!’ as she jumped into the water.

England manager Gareth Southgate also announced he was supporting the team as he said: ‘Hi to you all out there in Australia. You’re doing a brilliant job so that’s the first thing and there is, of course, no advice because you’ve done more than us already.

‘You know what is needed to win so all that remains is to wish you the very best for the final and we hope you can bring that trophy back. Good luck everybody.’

The joyous video also included messages from Yungblud, Russell Howard, Clare Balding, Kelly Holmes and Amelia Dimoldenberg.
