While smartphone users are virtually always given the option of whether or not to display read receipts, the feature has long been missing from Instagram DMs.
The app is finally testing out a feature that allows users to turn off the “seen” message when they open a DM. Both CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram head Adam Mosseri took to their Broadcast channels on the app to announce the beta version of the feature.
“We heard your feedback and have started testing a new feature that lets you turn read receipts off in your DMs. Soon, people will be able to choose when to let others see when they’ve read their messages,” Mosseri wrote.
Mosseri demonstrated how users will be able to head to the “Who can see your activity” section under the settings tab. From there, they’ll be able to switch the tab so that read receipts are no longer shown.
Users should note that vanish messages – those designed to disappear after being shown – will always show read receipts regardless of the setting.
