Les Dennis admits wife broke down in tears when he told her about Strictly stint

Les Dennis discusses joining Strictly Come Dancing 2023

Actor and comedian Les Dennis has admitted his wife Claire “cried” when he shared his Strictly Come Dancing news with her.

In an interview with Express.co.uk and other publications, the Extras star spilled on how his family had reacted to him joining the BBC show’s 2023 lineup.

Les divulged: “My wife cried, in a good way!”

Explaining Claire’s emotional response to the announcement, Les shared how the couple were full of anticipation while waiting for the call from Strictly bosses.

Les added: “She was really thrilled, because we were waiting for a while to find out, and then, suddenly, we got the call.”

When he received the news, Les was away from home, performing in a touring production of hit musical 42nd Street.

“I was away on tour with 42nd Street, and I called her and said I’ve got it,” the star recalled.

Les went on to reveal all on what he is excited to learn from his professional dancing partner, who will be unveiled during the Strictly 2023 launch show this weekend.

The former Family Fortunes host said: “I’d love to do some Ballroom and try to learn to improve my posture, instead of slouching!

“So Ballroom is something that excites me. We don’t know what we’re going to be best at.”

Sharing his personal goal for the series, Les said he is determined to reach the first themed week on the BBC show.

“I’d like to get to Movie Week, because that means you haven’t gone out first,” Les quipped.

The actor previously credited Ricky Gervais for keeping his career alive during a dark period, when the comedian offered him a part in his hit BBC sitcom, Extras.

Speaking in an unearthed 2021 interview from the My Time Capsule podcast, the former Family Fortunes host shared how a call from Ricky had saved him after his split from ex-wife Amanda Holden, and the negative reception to his 2002 stint on Celebrity Big Brother.

He divulged: “So Ricky came with this chance, and I seized it. And whenever I meet Ricky he says, ‘oh, it’s everybody’s favourite episode, everybody loves it’.

“It was a gift and it came at exactly the right moment, where I could be seen in a different way.”

The Strictly Come Dancing 2023 launch show will air at 6:35pm on Saturday 16 September on BBC One.
