Cheapest supermarket for Christmas dinner 2023 named – and it’s not Lidl

For many Britons, soaring costs and rising inflation means they’ll be glad to see the back of 2023.

And whilst no one wants to scrimp at Christmas, with the cost-of-living still placing financial strain on millions across the country, there might be a good reason for cutting back on a few items this year.

Thankfully, the personal finance experts at wealth.co.uk have examined the costs at UK supermarkets to determine which is the cheapest for you to buy your Christmas dinner from – trimmings and all.

By comparing the price of all the ‘essential’ items needed for a Christmas dinner, from main courses to drinks and desserts, the study worked out which supermarket is the cheapest – and it’s not Lidl.

The most cost-effective Christmas dinner can be bought at Aldi, with the ability to buy everything you need for £89.18.

This includes Turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets, sprouts, parsnips, mince pies, strawberry trifle, champagne, Irish Cream Liqueur, Bucks Fizz and plenty more besides.

The results make Aldi the only supermarket in the survey that enables you to feed six people at Christmas for under £100.

And whilst Aldi came out on top for the full meal, other supermarkets fare better for different items: Tesco is the cheapest for stuffing mix (£0.49 for 170g) and Mince Pies (six pack for £1.25), for instance, whilst Morrisons is the most cost-effective for Maris Piper Potatoes (£1.65 for 2kg) and Christmas Pudding (£2.00 for 400g).

Here is a full list of the cheapest UK supermarkets for Britons to buy their Christmas dinner:

Aldi – £89.18

Tesco – £110.53

Morrisons – £111.72

Sainsbury’s – £116.23

Asda – £126.84

Waitrose – £183.63

Personal finance expert Luke Eales said: “Aldi comes out on top as the cost-cutting champions – though that might not be a great surprise to many people… ditto for Waitrose being the most expensive!

“As we researched, plenty of supermarkets employed a little sticker on the side of certain products to assure people they were ‘Aldi price matched’. Unfortunately, they couldn’t keep up with them on every product.

“That being said, for those who really want to be thrifty, the lowest price you could get is £84.18 by shopping for the cheapest product across every supermarket… but considering the price of petrol (as well as your sanity), it might be easier to stick to one.”
