US rapper Desiigner has avoided becoming a registered sex offender as he was sentenced for exposing himself in public.
The Panda musician was earlier this year charged with indecent exposure after allegedly masturbating in front of flight attendants while on a flight.
Desiigner, real name Sidney Royel Selby III, was sentenced to 120 hours of community service and fined $5,000 (£4,000), and will remain on probation for two years after the incident on board a flight from Tokyo to the US in April of this year.
It had been reported that the 26-year-old would have to sign the sex offenders’ register after being caught ‘multiple times’ masturbating in his seat in first class.
However his attorney, Ryan Garry, has now told People this is incorrect, and the ‘misdemeanor conviction is not one that will cause Mr Selby to have to register as a sex offender.’
He said ‘if the State of California or some other government entity requires that MrSelby must register as a sex offender, then he must … if some government agency in California disagrees with our analysis, then we will address the matter at that point in time.’
It’s understood a flight attendant saw the rapper exposing himself on the flight in April; he initially covered himself only to be caught masturating minutes later by other members of the flight crew.
Authorities said at the time that Selby continued masturbating after being asked multiple times to stop.
A criminal complaint filed in April saw a federal agent who questioned Selby and others on the flight say that he exposed his genitals three times to passengers.
He is then said to have shown remorse to his security guard and apologised to the staff.
Once the plane landed in Minneapolis, authorities say they spoke with Selby, who told them he did what he did because he ‘didn’t really get much… cootie’ while he was in Japan and claimed that he was ‘brick hard’ when he boarded the aircraft.
What’s more, legal documents reportedly claimed Selby said he was ‘aroused’ by the flight attendant and ‘kind of showed her’ his ‘magic stick’ to give her ‘encouragement.’
He described one flight attendant as ‘a real great beautiful lady.’
In a statement posted on his Instagram at the time, the rapper explained that he was on medication from a previous hospital visit when he exposed himself on the flight.
He also wrote that he had been struggling with his mental health for the ‘past few months,’ and planned to check himself into a treatment facility.
