Tess Daly shares adorable welcome home party for ‘hero’ Vernon after ultramarathon

Tess Daly has given a glimpse into the adorable welcome home party she threw for husband Vernon Kay after his incredible ultramarathon for Children in Need.

The Strictly Come Dancing presenter, 54, took to her Instagram Stories on Sunday, 19 November to share a snap of the 'warm welcome' she'd organised for Radio 2 presenter Vernon, 49, after her returned home.

A series of congratulatory cards could be seen as well as a gift bag and small bottle of champagne. A card with 'congratulations Vernon' printed on it was on display a well as multicoloured bunting and numerous small candles.

"Our hero returns!" Tess proudly wrote. "A warm welcome for @vernonkay so proud!"

Vernon took on a 115-mile ultramarathon to raise money for Children in Need – a charity that supports disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. He started his journey in Leicester's Victoria Park and finished four days later at the Bolton Wanderers stadium, his hometown. As of 20 November, Vernon has raised £5,849,484.

Vernon started his journey on Tuesday, 14 November and finished at Bolton Wanderers Stadium on Friday, 17 November at 10.30am – an hour later than planned.

His proud parents Gladys and Norman, along with many family members, were there to greet him as he made his triumphant arrival.

Unfortunately Tess couldn't be there to greet her husband at the finish line, as she was busy in Blackpool filming Strictly Come Dancing. She expressed her disappointment at having to miss the incredible moment, saying she was "gutted".

Tess shared a screenshot of her last FaceTime call with Vernon before he completed his challenge on Instagram. She wrote to her 851,000 followers: "Absolutely gutted not to be at the finish line not to cheer you on today @vernonkay! (am at Strictly) BUT what a moment, what an achievement, I am SO PROUD of what you've done!"

The mum-of-two added: "I can see in your body that it's taken a physical toll but I know that it won't matter right now, as the total of over 3 MILLION raised for Children In Need @bbcin is just incredible, and the generosity and support shown by everyone that has so kindly donated and those who have come out to support you along the way has been beyond wonderful and I know it's kept you going (and me too), love you to bits Vern, you've got this!!"

Vernon's incredible fundraiser came at a physical toll however, with the TV presenter revealing he was "absolutely exhausted" after the 115-mile run.

"I am absolutely exhausted – physically, mentally, there's nothing in the tank. But it's been unbelievable, one of the most painful and joyous experiences I've ever had," he said, before adding that his "right knee is wonky".
