One of the creators of Friends has revealed that she spoke to Matthew Perry just two weeks before he died – insisting he seemed\u00a0‘happy, chipper and not weighed down by anything.’<\/p>\n
It was revealed on Saturday that the beloved actor had tragically passed away at age 54 from an apparent drowning.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He was found unresponsive in the hot tub at his Los Angeles home, but no official cause of death has been released yet.<\/p>\n
Now, the people behind the show that launched Matthew into mega stardom –\u00a0Marta Kauffman and David Crane – have spoken out about the last conversation they had with him.<\/p>\n

They spoke about it in a preview for an upcoming intimate sit-down interview with Today show host Hoda Kotb, which will air in full on Wednesday, November 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘When you spoke to Matthew two weeks ago, will you just tell me what that conversation was like?’ Hoda asked the duo.<\/p>\n
‘It was great, he was happy and chipper,’ Marta explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘He didn’t seem weighed down by anything. He was in a really good place, which is why this seems so unfair.’<\/p>\n
News of Matthew’s passing sent shockwaves around the globe.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The actor – who famously played\u00a0Chandler Bing on the sitcom for the 10 seasons it was on air – was discovered unconscious in his jacuzzi by his assistant, who frantically called 911 and lifted his head up to try to get him some air.<\/p>\n
But by the time the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived at the Friends star’s Pacific Palisades home, they said he was already dead.<\/p>\n

She and fellow creator David Crane spoke about it in\u00a0 upcoming intimate sit-down interview with Today show host Hoda Kotb, which will air in full on Wednesday, November 1<\/p>\n

‘He was happy and chipper,’ Marta (seen with Matthew in 2004) said of their last chat. ‘He didn’t seem weighed down by anything. He was in a really good place’<\/p>\n

The actor famously played Chandler Bing on the sitcom for the 10 seasons it was on air. He’s seen in the show in 2001<\/p>\n
An initial autopsy result has been ‘deferred,’ with toxicology reports set to follow.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Following his passing, Marta and David issued a joint statement, along with Friends director Kevin Bright.<\/p>\n
They remembered Matthew\u00a0for his ‘blinding intelligence’ and always being ‘the funniest person in the room.’<\/p>\n
‘We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew\u2019s passing,’ they said to Deadline. ‘It still seems impossible.<\/p>\n
‘All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘He was a brilliant talent. It\u2019s a clich\u00e9 to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew\u2019s case, there are no truer words.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us.<\/p>\n
‘We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment \u2013 not just to his work, but in life as well.<\/p>\n

Before his death, Matthew was very open about his battles with drug addiction and alcohol use, but he said he was clean in recent interviews. He’s seen in his jacuzzi on October 23\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.’<\/p>\n
Playing on the famous episode titles in Friends, they added: ‘We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
Before his death, Matthew was very open about his battles with drug addiction and alcohol use, but he said he was clean in recent interviews.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He wrote in his memoir, published last year, that he had spent a total of $9 million on his journey to getting sober, revealing he had been to 6,000 AA meetings, gone to rehab 15 times, and been in detox 65 times.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also admitted that he nearly lost his life in 2018, when his colon burst due to excessive opioid use. The health scare left him in a coma for two weeks and in the hospital for five months.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Matthew said in the tome that he overcame his addiction in 2021, and he was believed to be leading a healthier lifestyle in recent months.\u00a0<\/p>\n
First responders are said to have found anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications at the property – but there was no sign of any illegal drugs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
