Gardening mistakes are something households that own a garden will experience at one point or another.

To help avoid them, Toolstation has surveyed their panel of gardening and landscaping experts to discover the most common gardening mistakes they had seen on jobs.

While homeowners may think the worst mistake is something small like forgetting to water a plant, but this is not the case.

Landscapers disagree and argue that gardening design and the location of trees and plants are the most common mistakes homeowners make.

Toolstation asked gardening and landscape expert Fiona Jenkins from MyJobQuote.co.uk to explain why planting a tree in the wrong location is damaging to gardens.

It then grows too big and causes problems for you and potentially for your neighbours.”

The expert claimed that planting trees too close to the house, garden sheds or even patio can also “cause problems” from the tree’s root system interfering with foundations.

Instead, when choosing trees, do some research on how tall and wide they typically grow, then consider if the mature tree will still be suitable for the garden.

Homeowners should consult a professional landscaper before making any major changes to their garden, especially when planting trees.

Don’t miss…

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Experts at Toolstation claimed that tree roots can grow long and deep, potentially “damaging patios, driveways, foundations, and other features” of a garden.

Planting a tree in the wrong location can also lead to overcrowding, which can “stunt the growth of nearby plants”, shading them out and preventing them from getting the water they need to survive.

Fiona added that fast-growing hedges can “quickly become unmanageable”, which can block natural light from your or your neighbour’s property. Choose a slow-growing variety so you can maintain it at a reasonable height.

She suggested choosing a slow-growing variety so gardeners can maintain it at a reasonable height.

The gardening pro also shared another common gardening mistake, which is not maintaining lawn properly.

She argued that paying proper attention to grass will “result in a healthy lawn”. Regular mowing keeps the grass growing “strong and looking good”.

There are some best practices such as only cutting the top third of the grass when doing the first mow of the season. After that maintaining the same cutting height will keep the grass in good condition.

Fiona warned: “Cutting the grass too short, below three inches, will result in an unhealthy and patchy lawn. Shorter grass cannot retain as much water, and this can result in the grass going brown if there is not much rain.”
