And good luck.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Piping in from the other side of the room, 11-year-old Harper Beckham added a spirited, \u2018Good luck Lionesses!\u2019 with a wave.<\/p>\n<p>But David\u2019s message sparked controversy in the comments section of the video, as some struggled with his use of the word \u2018girls\u2019 to describe a squad of grown women, while others felt this was equivalent to calling a male team \u2018boys\u2019, as is often the case in football. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/metro-parent\/img\/fallback.png\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/metro-parent\/img\/fallback.png\"><\/p>\n<p>One said: \u2018Not sure that the right way to start the video \ud83d\udc80\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Another wrote: \u2018They\u2019re women David. Women!\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>But others pointed out that in football-speak, men in teams are never referred to as such, but always as \u2018boys\u2019 or \u2018lads\u2019 \u2013 and claimed this was equivalent to \u2018girls\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>One fan responded with a lengthy message, which read: \u2018When we refer to a team in men\u2019s football or address the players, we also say \u201cthe boys did well\u201d or \u201cthe lads got the job done\u201d, etc. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Never have I ever heard anyone with any bit of footballing IQ or knowledge say \u201cthe men made us proud\u201d or \u201cthe men played well\u201d when talking about the players. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Referring to the English women players as girls is not short of indulging in English footballing culture and its linguistic influence.
