DEADLY dengue fever – also known as 'breakbone fever' – has been detected in France. <\/p>\n
Neither of the two known cases had travelled abroad and are thought to have been infected in the local area.<\/p>\n

The couple, who live in Gardanne, in the\u00a0Bouches-du-Rh\u00f4ne – near Marseille –\u00a0are now "cured", according to health officials. <\/p>\n
"These are the first autochthonous (locally transmitted) cases of dengue fever identified this year in the region since the start of seasonal surveillance," the regional health agency\u00a0(ARS) of Provence-Alpes-C\u00f4te d'Azur, said on August 4. <\/p>\n
Experts are now racing to contain the spread of the disease, by conducting interviews in the local area to identify any other people with symptoms of the illness.<\/p>\n
Dengue is spread by\u00a0mosquitoes\u00a0and in most cases, isn't serious, the NHS states.<\/p>\n

Dengue is very common in certain parts of the world, such as\u00a0Africa,\u00a0Asia, Central and\u00a0South America\u00a0and the\u00a0Caribbean, guidance states.<\/p>\n
However, more recently, the bug has been found in\u00a0Croatia,\u00a0France,\u00a0Italy,\u00a0Spain,\u00a0Portugal\u00a0and\u00a0Madeira.<\/p>\n
A 44-year-old British woman made headlines in April after she was\u00a0infected with the virus\u00a0on a family trip close to\u00a0Nice\u00a0in September.<\/p>\n
She went to A&E in the UK with a three-day fever, pains and a rash but later made a full\u00a0recovery.<\/p>\n
<\/picture>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/picture>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/picture>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/picture>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Though Europe's climate has historically not been hospitable to the little disease-carrying pests Dr Owain Donnelly, from London\u2019s Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said the spread of the illness is \u201crapidly changing\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cHotter temperatures and more rainfall, and increasing global trade and\u00a0tourism, mean we may see more parts of Europe with the right combination of factors for dengue outbreaks," he explained previously.<\/p>\n A\u00a0report\u00a0published in June revealed disease-ridden mosquitoes – carrying several diseases including dengue – were found in 26 European countries.<\/p>\n Other diseases on the watch list includeRift Valley fever, chikungunya, West Nile disease, yellow fever and Zika.<\/p>\n There is no\u00a0vaccine\u00a0available against dengue fever for travellers.<\/p>\n To prevent dengue fever, you need to\u00a0reduce the risk of mosquito bites\u00a0and breeding.<\/p>\n Mosquitoes that transmit dengue tend to bite during the daytime<\/p>\n Tips include:<\/p>\n Most people who get dengue fever don\u2019t have symptoms, and if they do, they are mild.<\/p>\n Between four and ten days after the mosquito bites, symptoms include a sudden onset of fever, headache, muscle and joint pains.<\/p>\n A flat, red rash may also develop.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The illness usually gets better within a few days to a week without treatment, but painkillers can be taken to relieve symptoms.<\/p>\n Find out the health risks at your summer holiday destination\u00a0with this online tool.<\/p>\n People who get bitten by a dengue-carrying mosquito won’t always get symptoms.<\/p>\n If they do, these will usually start between four and 10 days after getting stung by an infected pest.<\/p>\n The symptoms are similar to the flu and include:<\/p>\n You should urgently see your doctor or call NHS 111 if you feel unwell after visiting a country where dengue is found.<\/p>\n In rare cases, people might develop more severe symptoms a few days after they first feel ill, including:<\/p>\n You should call 999 or go to your nearest A&E if you have symptoms of severe dengue.<\/p>\nWeight loss jabs set to be prescribed on new NHS apps – without need to see a GP<\/h3>\n<\/section>\n
