{"id":81744,"date":"2023-08-09T13:19:22","date_gmt":"2023-08-09T13:19:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/happylifestyleinc.com\/?p=81744"},"modified":"2023-08-09T13:19:22","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T13:19:22","slug":"sam-smith-in-mtv-vmas-gender-storm-over-male-free-nominations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/happylifestyleinc.com\/entertainment\/sam-smith-in-mtv-vmas-gender-storm-over-male-free-nominations\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Smith in MTV VMAs gender storm over male-free nominations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/SEI_162969939-7086.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>This year\u2019s MTV Video Music Awards has made history by nominating women only in one of their top categories, and somehow Sam Smith has found themselves at the centre of the gender debate.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the first time since the artist of the year category was introduced in 2017, all the nominees are women with Taylor Swift, Doja Cat, Beyonce, Shakira, Nicki Minaj and Karol G in the running for the gong.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, history has also been made with the VMAs\u2019 video of the year category which also features no male artists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Miley Cyrus is nominated with her video for Flowers, Nicki Minaj for Super Freaky Girl, Olivia Rodrigo\u2019s Vampire, Taylor Swift\u2019s Anti-Hero and Sza\u2019s Kill Bill, while Sam Smith and Kim Petras have received a nod for Unholy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sam, 31, has identified as non-binary since 2019, therefore, making the category male-free.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the nominations announcement on Tuesday, some have criticised the awards for omitting men from two of its top categories while others have struggled to grasp the concept of non-binary and wrongfully labelled Sam a man.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/metro-parent\/img\/fallback.png\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/metro-parent\/img\/fallback.png\"><\/p>\n<p>In one example, a baffled Twitter user asked: \u2018So if Sam Smith wins, did a male or female win the award?\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One also misgendered the Stay With Me hitmaker and added: \u2018Let\u2019s not allow modern \u201cfeminists\u201d to overrule and discredit the talents of male artists in the name of \u201cequality\u201d,\u2019 while many other derogatory comments have been made on social media. <\/p>\n<p>However, others used the debate as an opportunity to school the critics, with one stating: \u2018Sam Smith is a non-binary person.
