Prices for flights to Gran Canaria rocket from £42 in the last week of November to £301 in the last week of December — a 618 per cent jump.

Long-haul trips to Australia almost double.

Flights to Sydney go from £732 to £1,286 the week before Christmas.

The biggest hike is £833 to fly to Christchurch in New Zealand. The cost zooms from £743 to £1,576 — up 112 per cent.

Even “out of season” destinations see big rises. Prices to Orlando, Florida, climb from £371 to £658, research from travel website Kayak revealed.

Spokesman John-Lee Saez said: “While many Brits expect prices to go up at peak times, it might surprise many to see just how much they go up over Christmas.

“Destinations such as Amsterdam and Paris, which can also be reached by other means from the UK, see milder increases.”
