Zara Tindall says family occasions are about ‘hanging out’
Zara Tindall is the eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, 94, and Prince Philip, 99. While she is not a working member of the Royal Family, she has still attended various events with her royal relatives.
Before the coronavirus restrictions were enforced, Zara had been spotted with the Royal Family at many sporting events and celebrations, such as royal weddings.
When she is seen out, Zara’s body language could give a glimpse into her relationship with her in-laws.
The expert told Express.co.uk: “The body language dynamic between Zara and her uncle Charles has been giving joy for many years.
“If you were to place all the royals on some sliding scale of PDAs and tactile behaviour in public you’d see Charles close to one end as a rather hands-off, stuffy-looking kind of a guy while Zara would sit firmly at the other end as the most spontaneous and gloriously-gregarious-looking royal adult.

“Put the two together and you might expect Zara to tone her playfully affectionate rituals down with her uncle.
“Instead she seems intent on cutting through any formal stuff by instigating some very dominant-looking hugs that seem to both surprise and delight the Prince.”
Judi suggested Zara is more publicly affectionate than her uncle and does not tone this down around him.
However, analysing various pictures, she explained Prince Charles seems delighted with the dynamic.
“[In one photo] Zara uses a height differential to lean in for a very comprehensive hug for her uncle,” Judi continued.
“The neck hug is her signature ritual again and although Charles leans back very slightly, suggesting a more reserved response, his eyes are wrinkled in an eye-smile of delight as he uses eye contact while his mouth is open in an affectionate smile.”
During another encounter with the pair, Zara may appear more tactile than her uncle.
However, Prince Charles uses other cues to signal their close relationship, Judi continued.
She said: “Charles still holds his hands behind his back in a more cautious ritual.
“Zara leans in towards him here and gazes up at his face, grinning and laughing.
“Charles might still be hands-off but his congruent smile suggests the playful affection is reciprocated.”
Overall, Judi suggested Zara’s body language with Prince Charles is “protective” while they show a “playful” relationship.
She added: “Zara’s trick with Charles seems to be the neck embrace, which is both dominant, emphatic and escape-proof when she meets him.
“Here she keeps some torso distance but places a rather protective arm around his upper shoulders with her fingers touching his neck.
“Her more confident pose involves some leg-splay plus a hand in a fist-shape on her own waist and the elbow stuck out.
“Charles’s pose is more passive, with his hands clasped behind his back, but their eye-to-eye contact and head closeness signals an easy-going and playful relationship.”
The royal line of succession – who outranks who?
The line of succession to the British throne dictates the order in which each member of the Royal Family would ascend to the throne.
It is also seen as a ranking of importance with the head of the line, the Queen, taking the place of ruler.
Older children come before younger children. Traditionally boys came before girls, but this law was changed on 26 March 2015 before the birth of Prince William’s first child.
Incredibly, Catholics are still excluded from the line of succession, as are children born outside of wedlock.
The royals, who usually stick to a strict protocol when appearing in public, often arrive at events in ascending order of importance, with the most important royal arriving last.
Prince Charles, 72, is currently first-in-line to the British throne, followed by Prince William, 38, his oldest son.
Then comes Prince William’s children, George, seven, Charlotte, five, and Louis, two, and they are followed by Prince Harry, 36. Prince Harry is succeeded by his son Archie Harrison, born in May 2019.
