Tipster picks out each-way bet at Cheltenham

The highlight of the Doncaster card is the one-mile Vertem Futurity Trophy, formerly known as the Racing Post Trophy.

It’s widely considered as a signifier for future success in the Classics with names such as Saxon Warrior, Kingston Hill and Authorized all winning here before going on to succeed in the big flat contests.

Heading the market is the Magna Grecia , who comes into the race off the back of an impressive second place in a Group 3 at Newmarket last time out, which followed victory on debut in Naas.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained runner clearly has every chance but a price of just 13/8 does not appeal in a race of this class.

John Gosden’s Turgenev is next in the market at 4/1 and will have plenty of support while looking for a third win in a row, but our money is with Phoenix Of Spain , at 9/2.

He was very impressive in winning the Acomb at York back in August and was only beaten by subsequent Dewhurst winner Too Darn Hot last time out at Doncaster over seven furlongs. His running style looks well suited to the step up in trip to a mile, and with Jamie Spencer on board the Charlie Hills charge should give us a good run for our money.

We’ll also have a small each-way play on the progressive Great Scot at an attractive looking 14/1. Tom Dascombe’s runner is three wins from four and it looked like there was plenty more to come from him when he won the Ascendant Stakes at Haydock.

Over at Cheltenham for the jumps, and it’s the opening race of the day at 14:00 that has our attention, where Relentless Dreamer looks like the best each-way chance of the day, at 12/1.

He has been dropped 2lb by the handicapper after a fourth place in the Bet365 Gold Cup and he ran well off this mark at Uttoxeter in July.

Rebecca Curtis’ charge knows his way around here, running creditably in the Close Brothers over 2m4f+ at the Cheltenham Festival last year, and has decent form over this distance (3m1f) and good ground.

Don’t forget, Betfair Sportsbook are offering a free bet of up to £25 for every winner at 3/1 or over during ITV racing (free bet matching original stake, max £25).
