This is what 59 looks like: Retired PA training manager says magnesium baths and axing alcohol keeps her youthful
- Martine Grant, 59, who lives in London, is a retired PA training manager
- Bathing with flakes of magnesium has improved her sleep since menopause
- Reveals she stopped drinking alcohol after a medical treatment three years ago
Martine Grant is a retired PA training manager. She lives in London with her husband Iain.
I hit the menopause at 45 — and it triggered weight gain, which made me feel older. I took up weight training with personal trainer Lee Brooks (leebrooksofficial.com), which I still do for one hour, three times a week. It has helped me drop from a size 12 to an 8. I can now lift 46 kg, my own body weight, which I thought would be impossible after 50. That feels empowering.
Getting to sleep also became a big problem for me when the menopause started, as I’d be lying there worrying. Then I would wake up at 4am. I was exhausted. So, I upped my daily steps to 10,000 and started taking baths with Better You Sleep Magnesium Sleep Bath Flakes (£9.95, betteryou.com). Now, I get seven or eight hours’ sleep a night.

Three years ago, I stopped drinking. I had a medical treatment where the doctor recommended I give up alcohol and I enjoyed not having that one-too-many feeling. My mother died young from breast cancer and my sister had it too, so it was important to look after my health. Occasionally I have a Seedlip non-alcoholic gin (£26, seedlipgin.com).
Twice a year, I have a keratin treatment, which takes the frizz out of my hair (from £225, richardward.com). It makes my hair smooth and easier to style. I also use sulphate-free shampoo as it doesn’t strip away the hair’s natural oils. My favourite is Oribe’s Gold Repair and Restore Shampoo (from £50, spacenk.com).
As I’m approaching 60, I think I’m entitled to a bit of help. I have Profhilo every three months at the Waterhouse Young Clinic (from £490, waterhouseyoung.com). This involves injecting hyaluronic acid into the face, which is super hydrating. I also have Botox (£350, waterhouseyoung.com) to smooth any fine lines.
