With Meghan Markle still being relatively new to the royal family, many fans would think that she has no choice but to follow royal tradition and protocol. After all, Prince Harry’s grandmother, the queen, has a strict set of rules that she expects to be adhered to at all times.
While we know that typically, only royal family members are invited to spend Christmas at Queen Elizabeth‘s Sandringham Estate, we can only imagine that things might get a little touchy for those married royals who might wish to spend the holiday with their spouses’ family members. Although the queen broke tradition a while ago when she invited Duchess Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland, to her estate, she hasn’t been known to do things like that on a regular basis.
Often times, the royals are all together at Christmas. But this year, they likely won’t be. However, not many fans are as surprised about this as we might think. Here is why the Duke and Duchess of Sussex skipping Christmas with the royal family is not as shocking as it seems.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry aren’t happy with royal life at the moment
In a recent documentary, Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry openly admitted that they are struggling with royal life at this time. Duchess Meghan, a former American actress, is used to attention, but not at this level.
Markle has come under fire for a lot of things, some of which aren’t even true. And, as a result, she and Prince Harry have filed lawsuits against more than one British tabloid. According to Fox News, Duchess Meghan is finding some aspects of royal life to be a bit unfair, and Prince Harry isn’t exactly keeping quiet about how angry he is regarding the way the press is treating his wife.
In fact, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently announced that they will be taking a six-week break from royal duties so that they can enjoy some time away from the glaring spotlight that they have been living in for the past few years.
Prince Harry and Prince William are not on the best of terms right now
It is well-known that Prince Harry and Prince William currently have some tension between them. The younger prince went so far as to say that they are on “different paths” at this point in their lives.
Fans had been suspecting a potential feud for months on end. In the beginning, many news outlets were even reporting that the rift was between Duchess Meghan and Kate Middleton.
Today reports that the royal brothers’ relationship isn’t as close as it once was and that the two of them are struggling these days.

Having attended the 10th Annual One Young World opening ceremony on Tuesday, The Duchess of Sussex was joined today by The Duke of Sussex for a round table discussion on gender equity with OYW and Queen’s Commonwealth Trust young leaders. Over the last few days, these young leaders became @OneYoungWorld ambassadors with the intention to return to their communities and further existing initiatives to help change the world for the better. This year OYW partnered with the @Queens_Commonwealth_Trust, of which The Duke and Duchess are President and Vice-President respectively, to provide scholarships to young leaders driving positive social impact in the Commonwealth. This was the most exciting collaboration between two groups The Duchess is passionate about and has been working with for some time. While it might be thought that most people would be astonished at the idea of Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry skipping Christmas with the royal family, it is actually not all that shocking. To start, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have let everyone know that they plan to give Baby Archie a “normal” upbringing, which means he won’t always be following royal protocol.
Also, the royal family is becoming more modern with the younger generations. Prince William and Duchess Kate have skipped out on royal Christmas celebrations in the past in order to spend time with the Middleton family.
According to Today, Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry will be spending this Christmas with Markle’s mother. And although that might have been absolutely forbidden many years ago, it looks like Queen Elizabeth may have relaxed her rules a little. We hope that no matter where they are, the Sussex family enjoy the holiday to the fullest.
