The rise of Mason Greenwood has been one of the major highlights of Manchester United’s season.
The 18-year-old has scored nine goals in 2019/20, including four times in the Premier League, and has already picked up 85 points on Dream Team.
Tipped by many for greatness, there’s little doubt that he’ll go on to become a Dream Team favourite in a couple of years time — but for now he’ll have to make do with being our best bargain signing of the season so far.
DON’T FORGET – WIN £1K EVERY WEEKEND BY PLAYING FANTASY FOOTBALL
Back in the summer when the wonderkid was relatively unknown, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made plenty of headlines when he claimed the academy graduate was ‘the most natural finisher in the squad’, even ahead of the more experienced pair of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
Having sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan, Greenwood was earmarked for a key role in the side for this campaign — although few of us believed he truly would hit the ground running in the way he has.
Sceptical, we initially priced him at £1.5m on Dream Team, making him slightly more expensive than the likes of Daniel James, Dwight McNeil and Kelechi Iheanacho.
Of course, if you’d picked him for your fantasy football team from the beginning of the season, then you were most likely a little disappointed.
Greenwood barely played, picking up just a handful of minutes here and there from the bench as Ole elected to gradually acclimatise the youngster to Premier League football.
Then, on a night he’ll never forget, Greenwood netted his first senior goal in United’s opening match of their Europa League campaign against Astana with a lovely finish in front of the Stretford End — becoming United’s youngest scorer in Europe in the process.
That gave him 8 points for Game Week 5, and he followed it up in GW6 with a goal and a Star Man award in the Carabao Cup triumph over Rochdale.
Since then he’s become a regular in the side, often coming off the bench to devastating effect.
He came on as a substitute with 18 minutes to go against Sheffield United in October to net United’s second goal in the eventual 3-3 draw.
He also struck a late equaliser in the 1-1 against Everton, and added further Prem strikes in the convincing wins over Newcastle and Norwich.
Naturally, his run in the first-team and his recent flurry of goals has seen his Dream Team price soar; rising from £1.5m to £2.2m at the moment.
Even so, he’s still an absolute bargain and is by-far the best player on the game priced under £3m.
His current haul of 85 points is better than a plethora of Dream Team favourites, including Dele Alli, Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans.
He’s also United’s fourth-best player on the game, below only Rashford, Martial and Harry Maguire.
Having become one of Solskjaer’s go-to men in recent games, Greenwood points total is only going to improve and his price is still rising.
For now he’s the best bargain striker on our game, but what’s the guessing he’ll be one of Dream Team’s must have players in a year or so?
