Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex have separated themselves from the royal family as much as possible now, but that wasn’t always the case. When they first became serious, Meghan tried to fit in with Harry’s family but her efforts weren’t always matched. There have been rumors that Queen Elizabeth II lashed out at Meghan for her request to wear a specific tiara on her wedding day. Now, a new book is giving all of the details.
The tiara incident
There has been a lot of back and forth about what actually happened leading up to Meghan and Harry’s wedding.
Months after the wedding, The Sun reported that the tiara that Meghan wore on the big day was not the one that she originally wanted to have on. She reportedly wanted to borrow one that was adorned with emeralds but wasn’t allowed to.
In the end, Meghan wore the Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau which was last worn by Princess Margaret in 1965.
New details about the feud between Meghan Markle and the queen
Allegedly when Harry was told that Meghan could not wear the tiara she wanted, he said “What Meghan wants Meghan gets.”
In the new book, Battle of Brothers: William and Harry – The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult, royal historian Robert Lacey went into more detail about the argument that ensued after Meghan was denied the tiara.
“Not for the first time, nor sadly the last, the word ‘no’ pushed a button inside him and he flew into a rage,” an excerpt of the book shared by Mirror reads. “There were dressers and flunkies present, guarding and organizing the jewels, so it was inevitable that his now-famous exclamation should find its way to the outside world—What Meghan wants, Meghan gets!
“Her Majesty did not approve. ‘Meghan cannot have whatever she wants,’ she was reported to have replied. ‘She gets the tiara that she’s given by me.”
Another recent biography about Meghan and Harry, Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, tells a different story about the whole tiara selecting process. According to the book, the selection process went smoothly. Co-author Omid Scobie also reiterated that sentiment later in an interview, according to Mirror.
“The tiara selection went wonderfully. The Queen was very happy, Meghan was very happy,” he said. “In fact Meghan’s words when that story came out were ‘how sad, I love my tiara.’”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new life
Now, Harry and Meghan are doing things their own way. In January, they stepped back from their roles as working royals. Since then, they have paid back the Sovereign Grant for the money used to refurbish their U.K. home, Frogmore Cottage, and purchased a new home in Montecito, California.
Further distancing themselves from Harry’s family, the Duke and Duchess paid for their new home all on their own.
“Harry could’ve asked [Prince] Charles to contribute toward the cost of the house, but he chose not to,” a source told Us Weekly. “Getting his dad financially involved would result in the royals having control over him. It would mean going backwards.”
