Almost nothing’s more terrifying to a parent than finding what looks like a child’s latest work of art penned in Sharpie.
Joanna Gaines shared on her Instagram this weekend that she feared 8-year-old daughter Emmie had gotten a hold of Satan’s writing tool.
“Walked into Emmie’s bathroom this morning and my heart stopped for a second when I thought she had Sharpied all over her vanity. And then I took a moment and really read what she wrote and thought, ‘Well that isn’t the worst thing to be permanent.’ Then I touched it and realized it was erasable.”

Walked into Emmie's bathroom this morning and my heart stopped for a second when I thought she had sharpied all over her vanity. And then I took a moment and really read what she wrote and thought, "Well that isn't the worst thing to be permanent". Then I touched it and realized it was erasable?. I stared at her question and loved the thought of it and that that’s how she talks to God. May her faith always stay childlike and may I remember what she seems to already know. That God is the most relational and the most kind, and always near. ❤️

Emmie was checking in on God
In erasable purple marker, Emmie wrote: “Hi God, what are you doing?”
She surrounded the message in a purple package and topped it with a bow.
Must. Not. Cry.
No doubt Gaines has given the “Thou must not draw on the walls and furniture” speech before. Chip and Joanna Gaines have older children Drake, 13, Ella and Duke, 12, and their youngest, Crew, is 5 months.
But instead of immediate admonishment, Gaines reflected on Emmie’s message.
“I stared at her question and loved the thought of it and that that’s how she talks to God. May her faith always stay childlike and may I remember what she seems to already know. That God is the most relational and the most kind and always near.” ❤️
Brava, mama!
