I fear I'll lose sick dad who left home when I was five before we bond

He left home when I was five and Mum remarried.

I tracked him down when I was 18 but he’s never shown interest in me – he just sends the odd Christmas card.

I’m a woman of 60 now and I asked him to lend me some money as I needed to know that he cared. He refused, though he’s wealthy as hell.

So I posted on Facebook that he was a miserly sod, but then he wrote to say how much that upset him.

He’s in his 80s and not in good health and I guess he could die any time.

I don’t want to give up on my dad but I don’t want to give him the chance to make me feel worthless again.

DEIDRE SAYS: I’m so sorry. His lack of interest is hurtful but if he were the dad you deserve then he would have shown you love.

Don’t confuse money with caring. Facebook is a bad space to vent ill feelings. Write to him privately and explain what you said.

You may not get the answer you want, or even an answer at all, but don’t think you’re worthless. That just isn’t true.
