The 60-year-old retired lorry driver met wife Deb over a Sun crossword more than 30 years ago and they’ve both continued to be fans of the paper.

1) Stash ’n’ save: I build up my fivers month by month and put them towards my hobbies. Now you’ve bought me a Kindle, I’ll spend them on audio books instead.
2) DIY gifts: When I retired, I realised sitting around wasn’t good for me, so I went on YouTube and researched new hobbies. I discovered pyrography — burning pictures into wood. I bought the cheapest equipment I could and now I enjoy making gifts for people for birthdays and Christmas, which is cheaper than buying them.
3) Make the most of 2-for-1 deals: I love history and we have had a wonderful day out at Warwick Castle, as well as Alton Towers, thanks to Sun Savers Superdays.
4) Clean genius: For household tasks, I use cheaper items we already have. I clean mirrors with newspaper and vinegar, then smear a cucumber over to stop them steaming up.
5) Group together: I’ve got my daughter into Sun Savers and now, if my health isn’t permitting, she can go on the holidays from £9.50 with Deb. In the last 18 months my life has changed so dramatically. Where I used to think ahead, I’m taking it day at a time.
