But stifle those screams . . . with my tips, throwing a fright-fest for your kids won’t be scarily spendy.
1 – Make-up magic. Snap up creepy cosmetics for less at Superdrug, where it is three for two across its entire range.
Add a face-painting station and pick up a 14-piece Murder Motel makeup set at starbargains.co.uk for £1. Or go for Primark’s candy skull face gems, £2, for an ethereal fairy look.
2 – Trick or treat. Personalise your kids’ trick-or-treat bags by making a pumpkin stamp from an apple.
Cut an apple in half, dip it in orange paint, stamp on to the bag, leave dry and add their name in black marker pen.
Don’t forget to add a few spiders too! You can buy a 400ml ready-mix orange paint from Poundland for £1.
3 – Pumpkin fun. Pick up a large carving pumpkin from Asda for £1.50 and create your jack-o’-lantern using a nine-piece carving kit from Hobbycraft for £1.
Save the insides and follow a simple recipe online to make a pumpkin pie using condensed milk (Lidl, 99p) and shortcrust pastry (Aldi, 85p). Use any leftover pumpkin to make a risotto for your own dinner.
4 – Ice tricks. Avoid pricey fizzy drinks and create a spooky punch by filling a bowl with squash or juice and adding a few drops of red food colouring (Tesco, £1.30).
Then fill a clean rubber latex glove (Asda, £1.50 for ten) with water and freeze to create a frozen “floating hand” that also keeps the punch cool.
5 – Devil’s torch. Use old wine bottles as a candle holder for a table centrepiece. You could even add eyes to the bottle using white paint and a black marker.
Buy ten candles for £2 at Wilko and 400ml of ready-mix white paint from Poundland for £1. That is instead of splashing out £9.99 on a horror candelabra from partydelights.co.uk.
6 – Haunted house. Sweet treats can also make great party activities. Morrisons sells a make-your-own gingerbread haunted house kit which includes the biscuit shapes, decorations and icing for just £5.
Buy two, split the children into teams and see who can build it first.
Invite ten children and that works out as just £1 per head!
