GETTING the size right is a big part of choosing the best bedside lamp for your bedroom.
We explain the other things to look out for and round up some of the most practical and stylish options to buy.
What size bedside lamp should you get?
Choosing the best bedside lamp actually comes down to the size of your bed.
Traditionally, bedside lamps go on top of bedside tables. And bedside tables are supposed to be level in height to your mattress and about a third of the width of your bed.
So the bigger your bed, the bigger the bedside table needs to be.
Once you have the size of your bedside table, you can then start sizing up your lamp.
Ideally, the width of your bedside lamp should be about a third of the width of the bedside table.
Heightwise, your lamp should be a couple of inches taller than the height of your bedside table.
Basically the lampshade should be about shoulder height when you’re sitting in bed so the light doesn’t shine straight into your eyes when you’re reading.
What else to look for when choosing a bedside lamp
Aside from the size of your lamp, you should make sure that it’s easy to switch on and off, especially from bed.
One-touch lamps – where you just touch the surface to turn on or off – are best for this but lamps with the switch on the cord are also great.
You definitely don't want to be feeling for the switch near the lightbulb in the dark.
