Food hack: TikTok user shows how to 'save half of an avocado'

Avocados can be rock hard one day and overripe and mushy the next. Luckily, there’s a clever food hack to find out if an avocado is in perfect condition to be eaten.
Choosing the best avocado is key to its shelf life and you can tell how ripe one is by touch.
An unripe avocado is firm to touch whereas a ripe avocado will feel softer when pressed.
If it is unripe when purchased, the avocado may take up to a week to ripen, whereas an uncut ripe avocado may be at its best for a maximum of three days.
While many carry out the “squeeze” test in store, there is another way to check the condition of the avocado.
Instagram user @mommy.life.squad shared her hack.
In the video, she said: “I bet you don’t know this about avocados…pinch off the cap [or small nib at the top].
“If it’s white, it’s rotten. If it’s brown it’s about to go bad. If it’s green it’s perfect.”
If the nib or stem doesn’t come off easily, the fruit is not ripe enough to eat.
While hundreds loved this hack, some commented on how it can spoil an avocado.
Taking the nib off can cause the avocado to oxidise and ripen faster.
User @12lizzie12 said: “Everyone is squeezing and bruising them [avocados in supermarkets] all the time, just check the cap and if it doesn’t come off, leave it for someone else.”
User @thicccviking wrote: “I only ever do it if I plan to eat it the same day.”

According to the NHS, adults should eat no more than half an avocado a day.
As for how the other half of an avocado should be kept, there are several ways.
“If you need to store an avocado that has already been cut, squeeze some lemon or lime juice over the exposed flesh and store it in an airtight container or cling film to prevent it from going brown,” Tash Blythe, food hygiene expert told Express.co.uk.
“An avocado going brown after it has been cut is not a sign of spoilage, it is just a chemical reaction where the flesh reacts with the oxygen in the atmosphere.”
Tash went on to say that while a brown avocado “may look unappetising it is still safe to eat”.
It is also recommended to leave the pip or stone in the cut avocado as this will prevent all of the flesh from browning.
