Nike's Space Hippie 04 Returns in "Iron Grey"

When describing shoes from its sustainable Space Hippie line, Nike likes to say that they’re “trash.” This is, of course, in a literal sense instead of a figurative one: the Space Hippie 01, Space Hippie 02, Space Hippie 03 and Space Hippie 04 are constructed almost entirely of recycled, repurposed materials. Now, the latest pair to emerge from the Swoosh’s proverbial trash heap is the Space Hippie 04 in “Iron Grey.”

Though each silhouette in the four-shoe Space Hippie line is distinct in its own way, the 04 takes first place on two fronts: it’s the lightest, and boasts the lowest carbon footprint. The “Iron Grey” mixes various grey shades on its knit upper, all of which are accented by black asymmetrical laces, black heel tabs and an embroidered white Swoosh on the lateral quarter that dips down into the midsole. This upper is constructed of “Space Waste Yarn,” which is made from roughly 85% recycled polyester. There’s also touches of orange on the tongue tag and the medial side’s seam.

Down below, midsoles are done up in a lighter grey shade and feature multi-colored rubber flecks. They’re soft and spongy thanks to their Crater Foam construction, which uses recycled NikeGrind rubber with a blend of various foams. Outsoles are mostly stripped back, but add hard-wearing recycled rubber on toes and heels for extra durability.

The Nike Space Hippie 04 “Iron Grey” will release on Nike SNKRS come November 14. The MSRP is set at $140 USD, and both men’s and women’s sizes will be available.

Elsewhere in the world of Nike, Ken Griffey Jr.’s Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Freshwater” is set to return in 2021.
