The sneakers business has undoubtedly experienced a rise in the market in recent years. The footwear industry has skyrocketed with the help of resale platforms driving the prices of shoes up by tenfolds, selling them way above their original value. Auction houses like Sotheby’s have seen the uptick in the market and have hopped on the trend of selling sneakers, appointing their newest head of sneakers just last week.
Recently Sotheby’s has announced that they will be auctioning off some of the most highly-coveted pairs of Jordan sneakers. These sneaker models were designed in collaboration with famous rappers including Travis Scott, Kanye West, Eminem, Drake and DJ Khaled. Not only are these sneakers rare in numbers, but the partnerships have marked memorable eras within the footwear industry.
Some noteworthy listings by Sotheby’s include the Nike Air Jordan IV Retro Eminem x Carhartt collab, the Nike Air Jordan IV Retro Travis Scott Purple and a pair of the Nike Air Yeezy 2 Mismatch sample signed by Kanye West himself. All these sneakers are up for auction and already have bidding ranges between $15,000 USD to $26,000 USD thus far. Sales for these sneakers are expected to continue to rise, having seen previous sneaker auctions at Sotheby’s hit record prices. In May 2020, Michael Jordan’s 1985 Game Worn Autographed Nike Air Jordan 1s were sold at Sotheby’s online auction for $560,000 USD. The pair set a new sneaker record, not only for the auction house but globally.
