Between Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall’s alleged feud (which may be over — for now) and the fact that there won’t be a third Sex and the City film (reportedly because of Cattrall not wanting to do it), there’s been a lot of drama surrounding the third SATC movie that may never come to fruition but still looms large in the mythology of this series. If you consider yourself a die-hard fan of the series and especially a fan of Carrie and Mr. Big’s romance, just wait until you hear this news which relates back to that elusive third movie.
According to Origins podcast host and journalist James Andrew Miller, SATC 3 would’ve killed off Big (come again? Carrie would’ve been made a widow?!). In the podcast’s three-episode series called “Sex and the City: 1, 2 & Out,” Miller spoke with Parker, Chris Noth and other stars from the beloved HBO series about the origins of — you guessed it — SATC back in the late ’90s. This included far-ranging and intimate conversations about the inner workings of the show as well as what the franchise could have become.
This leads to Miller claiming he had seen part of the SATC 3 script, in which Big’s death was revealed. Apparently, Big dying and the overall story of the third film impacted Cattrall’s decision to not want to reprise her role as Samantha Jones.
“People close to Kim believe that the script didn’t have a lot to offer the character of Samantha,” Miller said. “They point to the fact that it calls for Mr. Big to die of a heart attack in the shower, relatively early on in the film, making the remainder of the movie more about how Carrie recovers from Big’s death than about the relationship between the four women.”
Cattrall hasn’t commented on the podcast or the above claim. However, at the beginning of Origins, Miller explained he received a statement from Cattrall’s publicist explaining why she wouldn’t be part of the podcast. “Kim said through a representative that she felt she had no more to say about Sex and the City. So, when appropriate in this episode, we will use comments of hers from past public interviews to make sure her perspective is covered,” Miller said.
SATC fans have, understandably, had strong reactions to the huge spoiler regarding Big. As one fan tweeted, “I mean, I did not sit through 6 seasons and 2 movies of Carrie whining and pining over Mr. Big only to have him die at the end. Glad this shit ain’t happening! No more #SATC movies please.”
As for Big’s death, well, Noth said he heard that the script for the third film was “superior” to the first two movies. The actor also revealed he “didn’t really enjoy” either of them.
“I really hate corny stuff and it could be because I’m a little bit of a cynic,” Noth said. “Like, the whole thing at the end of the movie in the shoe closet — hated it,” he said about the final scene in the first movie. “Hated the thing at the end of the movie after I felt she deceived me and then I say, ‘Well, it’s time I give you a bigger diamond ring.’ Hated it. I just hate the cornball shit and I thought it was just really sentimental and overly romantic without any feet in realism.”
That said, Noth noted he still would’ve done SATC 3, because, not only did he want to reunite with Parker and his other co-stars, but, as he said, “I’m a team player.”
It’s hard to imagine Big dying, especially after how long it took for he and Carrie to end up together. Fans who are upset about the idea should just be happy that the third movie isn’t happening.
