Haunting, Paranoia and All That Dance Horror

#SpeakingInDance | “I love psychological subject matter and I’m a huge horror film buff,” said @jamesbwhiteside. In “The Tenant,” the choreographer @arthurpita’s new dance piece based on Roland Topor’s 1964 novel, James is a man haunted by Simone, his apartment’s former resident, played by @cassiepearlt. “I’ve been dying to do something so decidedly un-ballet, and I know that’s so trite,” said James, a principal dancer with @abtofficial, who also has a drag persona, @uhubetch. “I get that. But this is different. I’ve never headlined a show before that wasn’t a drag show.” This sequence, which combines 2 pieces out of order — “We don’t want to give anything away,” James said — shows his character becoming consumed by paranoia; the complete show, featuring music by Frank Moon, is at @thejoycetheater this week. “I’ve never had as much time to explore a character,” James told the @nytimes writer @giadk. “It feels like an actor’s approach.” @jay_dockendorf made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
