The Real Reason Meghan Markle Is Sending Notes To Women Looking For Work

In March 2021, Meghan Markle sent some handwritten notes to women looking for work, according to People. The Duchess of Sussex took some time to jot down some words of encouragement to a few women who were hoping to find new jobs, adding a “personal message” to each one. “You’ll be amazing in your interview! Remember deep breaths and be yourself,” Meghan wrote in one of the notes. She also sent at least one note to a woman who had recently found a job, sending her “personal congratulations,” and applauding the woman on her “successful job interview.”

The thoughtful messages were crafted by Meghan as part of her collaboration with Smart Works, a charity that works to provide “unemployed and vulnerable” women with tools they need to land a job. According to the organization’s Instagram account, Smart Works provides “clothing and coaching” to these women, and there’s a pretty good track record, too. A total of 65% of their clients are “successful in the first month.” But there’s even more of a reason that Meghan sent notes to some women. Keep reading to find out the real reason that Meghan participated in this joint venture.

Meghan Markle's personalized notes will continue on

Meghan Markle has been filling out these note cards “in celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day,” according to a post on the Smart Works Instagram account. Meghan will continue to hand-write these notes for a couple of more weeks at her new foundation, Archewell — which she started with her husband, Prince Harry — in an effort to encourage “people around the world to perform acts of compassion for women in their lives and communities.”

According to People, Smart Works was “one of the four patronages Meghan announced she would support in her royal work.” Although she and Harry decided to step down as senior members of the royal family — thus leaving many of their royal duties behind — Meghan has chosen to keep working with the charity, which holds a special place in her heart. In fact, Meghan’s very first post-maternity leave outing was in support of a new clothing line that consisted of women’s workwear that benefitted Smart Works, according to People. Meghan called on one of her good friends, designer Misha Nonoo, to help with the line, which ended up being a huge success, according to Town & Country. The outlet reported that some of the items sold out online before the launch!
