The TV personality, 40, is best-known for her appearances on the reality show The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE). Following her debut on the ITV show a decade ago, she has also featured on Celebrity Big Brother, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, Dancing on Ice and more. She is due to return to screens tonight on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories.

While Collins is well established as a media personality, she took an unusual turn and stated that she should enter politics due to her Brexit beliefs.

But in the teaser trailer for her ITVBe show, Gemma Collins: Diva Forever, she admitted that she told a lie about what she voted for because she was “on the spot”.

During the opening seconds of the clip, she said: “Brexit. I need to go into politics. I voted out.”

Moments later, Collins looked rather sheepish and frowned as she looked into the camera.

She said: “But I did tell a bit of a lie there.

“I was on the spot, I didn’t vote Leave Brexit (sic).”

More than 110,000 people watched Gemma’s confession on her personal Instagram page.

One annoyed viewer commented: “The UK gets the Prime Minister it deserves. This culture is leading to catastrophe.”

A second wrote: “This is a minefield.”

A third added: “I hoppeeeee (sic) you didn’t vote Leave!”

In another unusual remark, one person thanked her for “lowering the expectations of what makes TV good”.

They continued: “It’s so low [that] now every poorly educated apeth can think they can have a career in entertainment.

“You’ve done so much for glorifying mediocrity and making average acceptable.”

But others seemed more forgiving of Collins’ lie, which followed her claim to be a Brexiteer on Good Morning Britain in April 2019.

She told Morgan and Susanna Reid that former Prime Minister Theresa May needed to “make a decision” and push through a Brexit deal.

When Collins was asked whether she cast her ballot in the 2016 EU referendum, she said: “Erm, I voted out and basically…”

Morgan interjected: “Would you do it again?”

She said: “Yeah! But I’d think that Theresa needs to lead our nation.

“Take a deep breath, Theresa, make a deal and let’s move forward. What is she doing?”

Morgan explained that Mrs May’s Brexit deal had been rejected three times by MPs at that point.

Gemma Collins gets emotional as she reflects on being trolled

Collins replied: “Well she needs to take the lead.

“If you’re a leader in this country, take the lead and own it.

“The people will follow in the end.”

By December 2019, Collins told the Daily Star that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s team had “got in touch” to ask her for advice.

She said: “[They] want me to speak to them regarding my take on Brexit.

“They want my views on Brexit because obviously the public listen to me.”

Collins, then-38 years old, claimed the Government wanted “somebody my age to give my spin on it” to make it “more understandable”.

She said: “A lot of this politics stuff is quite difficult for people to understand.

“So I was going to do the GC (Gemma Collins) breakdown on it.”

Collins believed her ability to communicate in a clear and simple way might help more people to understand Brexit.

She said: “At the end of the day people like Boris, but because he is a bit eccentric they might not understand him.”

Collins vented her frustration over the amount of time it took for Britain to leave the EU and stated: “A decision has to be made!”

Despite that, she felt that Mr Johnson was “the way forward” and admitted she liked him.

Collins added: “I think if I get the opportunity to get up close and personal with Boris and have a good chat with him – I could help him.”

Gemma Collins appears on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, which airs at 9pm tonight on ITV.
