Former Emmerdale star Gemma Oaten has written about her heartache following the death of her grandmother.
The actress has taken to social media to share her grief by writing an emotional post on Instagram .
Gemma writes in the caption alongside images of her family with her Gran: "I can’t believe I’m writing this. Doesn't seem real. As many know I couldn't believe it that I’d managed to get home to Hull from Edinburgh where we’d been on tour, amidst the storm, and was determined as wanted to see grandma so bad, who had been in hospital all last week.
"I even made a comment that Grandad had got me home…looking down from up above. Sadly I was too late. I made it home expecting to visit her but when I got to our house, Mum and dad had to tell me she had died that morning.
"Words fail me. I am distraught and devastated. She was everything. And I just wanted one last time with her."
The heartbroken star went on to share why she has chosen to share some personal photos and her current resolve to keep going as "the show must go on."
She continues: ‘But I guess she wanted our memories as in these pictures. Laughter, Love, friendship, crisps and wine. She knew. And god love her she waited until I was home with our family and my Ruby, when I could have been anywhere in the country.
"In time this will bring me comfort, but right now…day by day I guess.
"I’m now in York with @bklproductions Ten Times Table at @grandoperahouse_york and got through last 2 nights show because of the love and compassion of such an amazing cast and crew. I can’t thank them enough. This week is for you grandma. The show must go on.
"She loved the play and I’m so grateful she saw me in it. She loved me for me. She loved us all so much. Time will heal. Grief is universal. Cherish life and loved ones while you have them always. Take a breath and don’t miss what’s in front of you.
"Sleep well Grandma Jackson, Grandad will hold you and love you for eternity up there ♥ #grandma #angels #rip #loveyoueternally"
Gemma ended her post with a heartfelt message of gratitude to her followers.
"Words fail me. Thank you for the countless messages re my Grandma passing. It all feels so unfair… I was so close to home.
"But I know now in my heart she wanted me to remember her in a certain way every night I’m on stage is for her now. Love and thanks to all. Truly."
Gemma appeared on Emmerdale from 2011 until 2015 when her character fled the village with her baby son Archie.
However, the character of Rachel was killed off-screen last September to facilitate the return of Archie to the show and his father Jai Sharma (Chris Busson).
