Former GB News presenter Andrew Neil has taken to Twitter to pay tribute to his friend Johnny Gold, who has died aged 89. Gold was the founder of Jermyn Street hotspot Tramp.

The nightclub was attended by A-List celebrities and members of the Royal Family.

Andrew wrote in view of his 1.1 million followers this evening: “A sad night.

“My wonderful friend Johnny Gold of Tramp nightclub fame has died.

“He’s been described as a legend. He wasn’t and never saw himself as such.

“He was simply the sweetest, most delightful, most decent person you could ever hope to meet.

“I grieve for his passing,” the journalist concluded.

He then added in a separate tweet: “On quiet Wednesday nights he used to convene a “brain’s trust” at Tramp with mutual friends at his famous table. “You’ve got the brains, I’ve got the trust”, he always said, typically self-effacing.

“I adored him. Condolences to his wonderful wife and children.”

Fans took to the comments section of Andrew’s emotional post to share their own condolences.

garymorley1976 penned: “I think the fact that he seems to be universally described as a totally decent, honest, true to himself fella in his world might make him a bit of a legend – to those who knew him.”

ThorpeLynden added: “May he rest in peace and rise in glory. The end of a legend.”

wardiesj commented: “A wonderful man, kind and generous, he was the best and so many wonderful nights at his club to thank him for – goodnight Johnny.”
