As a parent it's really horrible to watch your baby in pain, and mums and dads try everything they can to make their little one feel better.
Mum-of-two Carol Heaton felt completely helpless when nothing was helping her eight-month-old son's bad cold.
He was antibiotics for an ear infection and was really congested and coughing.
The family were in Canada on holiday at the time, and a relative suggested she tried an old-school home remedy – and it completely cleared it up in just a few days.
Talking to Kidspot , she said: "I tried putting a baby balm on his chest, keeping him hydrated and used a saline spray for his nose. There is not much out there.
"My family insisted on me trying this old remedy on him – an onion sugar cough syrup.
"It has been used in my family for many years, my mum used to give this to us when we were kids. I was desperate to help him feel better and for some sleep myself."
Within just a few hours Zavier started bringing up phlegm which eased the congestion on his chest.
Carol says he started sleeping better at night immediately and the cough soon cleared up completely.
She said: "To say I was amazed would be an understatement. Wow, something that actually works.
"It's a great recipe because it's easy to do, two ingredients which you have sitting in your pantry or fridge. It's quick acting and all natural. And the most important part is that it actually works."
Carol shared the recipe on her website Walk in Pantry .
To make the syrup, which she claims is suitable for kids older than six months, cut a large onion into large slices and cover with three heaped tablespoons of sugar.
Leave for a few hours until a juice starts to collect. Give the child a spoonful of the juice every hour.
